In this article, a man was suspected for the homicide of his estranged wife and a 16-year old girl. The murder took place in South Carolina, and the suspect fled towards North Carolina. He ended up on I-85. He was chased for 130 miles before finally surrendering. I think it's crazy that it took so long to apprehend the suspect. I thought it would be easier to simply stop the suspect in his tracks. Apparently not though. I'm glad the suspect was caught before he could harm anybody else, especially since he's in our own state.
I personally don't think that Raymore was the cause of the child's death. When terrible things like this happen, people tend to want to find someone to point fingers at so they themselves feel free of guilt. They is a definite possibility that the death was caused by a reoccuring self-injury. I definitely hope that Raymore is innocent because I would hate to see someone act violently against such a small child!
This week I watched a video about an 8 year old kid who took over the wheel when his grandma had a siezure while driving. Dillon and his grandma were on the way to church when it happened. I think this story is very cool and also very heroic on Dillon's part. In the interview with the kids dad he said he might have even panacked in that situation, which is why I am amazed that he was very clam during that situation. I think he deffinetly saved his grandmas life and that he should be honored for his actions.
In one Californian county, a new ordinance will ban restaurants from giving out toys with meals that contain more than 485 calories, more than 600 milligrams of sodium, more than 35 percent of total calories from fat or more than 10 percent of calories from added sugar. While the California Restaurant Association is extremely upset with this new ordinance, I think it's a good idea and a step closer to fighting child obesity. The fact remains that those toys do have a pull on children; I remember when I was a kid I would beg my mom to take me to McDonald's so I could get a Happy Meal with a toy in it. Toys make the meal more appealing; by banning the toys from being in the meals, some children may not be as interested in Happy Meals. Hopefully this step may help child obesity rates in that county.
This articles tells about how crews are trying to deal will a giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It was spilled 20 miles away from the shore, and they're deciding to set it on fire before it reaches the shore and wrecks havoc to the costal environment. The way that the oil was spilled was that there was an explosion (cause still unknown) at an oil rig out in the ocean. 11 workers were missing, and now presumed dead. To make matters worse, approximately 42 thousand gallons of oil are leaking into the Gulf every day. The reason that the crews want to burn the oil (after they used a boom to collect most of the oil into one spot) is that it is relatively safe, easy, and it will leave solid debris that can be picked up by a net. Another compelling argument is that because the submersible robots meant to stop the oil leak failed, so they have to do something fast.... -Jamie Chen
This is a disturbing story of how a explosion on an oil rig, has caused a massive oil spill in the gulf. The oil rig was supposed to be safe, and the accident could have been avoided, saving lots of trouble. this oil spill has potential to be one of the worst spills in US. I think the oil rigs need to be safer and more reliable to be able to use them. An oil spill this large will have a huge impact on the ocean and the life thats dwells in it. Our technology should be able to make a more reliable place to gather oil and other rescources.

I must say, wow, I am impressed. An actual vaccine for cancer (and possibly HIV) that has been approved by the FDA? Well, that's new. The fact that it can extend someone's life by taking Provenge by an average of 4.1 months (which doesn't sound like a lot, but is good in some standards) is just mind-blowing. I had to read this twice to make sure I wasn't dreaming. It definitely is taking a HUGE step ahead in the survival of humans (since cancer is such a critical disease implementing our survival) and I do believe it just might have a more prolonged effect. I may not know much about biology, but I'm pretty sure that taking out white blood cells and adding Provenge then shoooting them back in is a hard job, but I'm glad they were able to do it because that can prolong the life of a person whose time had not yet come.
(last week's that I missed): http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/04/29/how-oil-spill-affect-wildlife/
Well, the oil spill is going to do some pretty hefty damage. True, it may have been just an accident, I haven't heard the whole story of how the explosion happened, but it will leave a path of widespread disaster. Bird wings cannot be coated with oil, no, because they cannot fly as well and cannot repel water as well. Fish, though under the water's surface, are going to be affected because of the long line of the food chain. Some fish eat plankton, which thrive in the shallow end for sun, and those fish are eaten by others and so on. Eventually that oil from the plankton is going to reach a endangered species, or one that is not, in such a harmful way that it will most likely kill it. This we don't want to happen, we need to get moving on this oil spill quickly and clean it up before it can do any significant damage to our coastlines.
Its good to hear that there is finally something definite being done to combat cancer. The fact that this medicine can stop prostate cancer is probably a big breakthrough for medical research for all types of cancer. If they can use the same ideas as they used to make this medicine, they can probably make vaccines for a bunch of other types of cancer. The new method of disease treatment will also help to find ways to prevent, and get rid of HIV, and this means that hundreds of thousands less people will be dying from these diseases every year.
Recently, a law was passed that allowed cops to pull someone over if they “suspected” they were an illegal immigrant. Now, to be fair, the cops might have more insight on this than I do, but I’m not sure how you can tell whether someone is an illegal immigrant or not. I mean, do you know? I’m not sure anyone can tell the difference between an illegal immigrant and a legal one, so why is this law in affect. This law essentially just allows racial profiling! Are we going backwards? I though this was the land of freedom and opportunity, not the land of “get pulled over because you’re Mexican.”
A law was passed recently in the state of Arizona that makes it legal for police to ask for identification papers proving citizenship. Originally my reaction to this was disgust, that we as americans would endorse racial profiling. But as I thought about it,this law is merely enforcing those already in place. Illegal immigration is illegal. Thats kind of a no-brainer. To remove illegal immigrants is upholding federal immigration laws, not racial profiling. I only hope that the police will use this to ensure the citizenship of criminals and be able to decrease the amount of criminals in our country by deporting a percentage, rather than pulling over hispanics. If this law is used in a responsible and very careful manner, I think that this could be a great step towards immigration reform in America without building walls.
I think that it is pretty amazing that and 8 year old was able to stay calm and take over the wheel for his grandma. She was having a siecure and was unable to drive and instead of freaking out, he took the wheel and pulled over to the side of the road. His dad and grandpa had taught him how to steer and put on the breaks in case something happened to the driver and it's a good thing they did. I think that it is an important lesson to learn and to teach kids at a young age because you never know what could happen.
While I do applaud this county for making an effort to reduce childhood obesity, I do not think that they are actually fixing the problem, now do I think that the county government should be given that much power. Not even the Federal government. I do think that the government should be allowed to have fairly strict regulation on businesses, this crosses the line. If the business wants to include the toys in their meals, that's up to them. This county is trying to fix, or at least try and slow it down. This is not the way to do it however. They are trying to fix the problem without very much effort. They are not solving the problem at its roots. Now, if I knew how to solve this problem, I could talk about how this is a terrible idea. But I don't, so all I can do is applaud their efforts.
A drug has been created that causes improvements in the behavior of people with Fragile X syndrome. The syndrome causes mental retardation, alongside things like hyperactivity and repetitive motion. I really hope that this drug continues to work, and that new, similar discoveries will be made! This is a really exciting advancement for medicine. Previously this type of disorder was thought to be untreatable by medication. This new discovery will make a big difference to many families. Hopefully, one day similar drugs can be found for similar diseases.
Last Thursday oil started pouring out in huge amount in the Gulf of Mexico. Many on the wildlife, even the workers that work there are at risk. The birds in a lot of trouble because this oil spill happened to be right while they're breeding. The birds are very vulnerable right now. I think it's so sad that all these birds and other animals are dying. Humans beings as a race are far too dependent on oil for survival and it's starting to huge negative impacts on the environment. If we keep up this dependency things will only get worse. People really need to start considering other alternatives for fuel or else more things like oil spills and fossil fuel emissions will only get worse.
On Friday an oil spill reached the shore of Louisiana. It is also predicted that high tides and strong winds will cause the oil to go farther into inlets, ponds, and lakes by Sunday. One positve to come from this is Obama said he would delay all off shore drilling until the cause of the oil spill is found. I believe that off shore drilling is expensive and bad for the environment. That plus the fact that we aren't going to be getting a lot of oil from it just makes no sense. It also contradicts Obama's eco friendly campaign that he had while running for president. I think that what happened in Louisiana is awful but at least it will give Obama time to reconsider off shore drilling.

In Africa, Malnutrition has become an even larger problem now, than it has been for quite sometime. A newborn baby, weighing a little under the normal weight died 20 minutes later after having this problem.
Most of the cause for this problem has been not because of the lack of food that is being partaken, but because to the rebels who set up roadblocks in the bush and extort money, including from farmers bringing their produce to market. Farmers consequently raise their prices to eke out a profit, pushing the cost of many types of food beyond the reach of impoverished families.
The farmland in the country is very well fertilized and is very simple to grow and produce food.
