Officials place sexually violent predator in a small town.

The tiny community of Desert Center in California is known as a place to escape the problems of the city. Unfortunately for the residents, they are going to have to be on the look-out 24/7, because a convicted rapist and child molestor was placed in this town by county and state officials. This new resident of Desert Center has changed the way almost everyone there feels about their town. The residents are living in constant fear and do not allow their kids to go out and play like they did before. Willet, who has been described as a person who resembles a grandfather, is an incredibly dangerous sex offender who is dangerous to both women and children and he's demonstrated that through his convictions and actions.

I can't seem to understand why the police will put such a dangerous person in the midst of peaceful and innocent people. I would be SO mad if I had to live in a neighborhood with a sex offender and I hope that he does not sexually assault any of the women and children in this community.

This article talks about a region called Glover's Reef, located approximately 28 miles off the shore of Brazil. There are 17,500 acres of protected no-take zones, where no kind of fishing is allowed. It makes up 20% of a 87,000 acre area that is entirely protected. This means a lot for the local eco-system and wildlife conservation as a whole.

Homeless Man Asked to Live on Billboard

In Austin, Texas, a campaign for homeless people and poverty has been started. The organization that has started this campaign has enlisted a homeless man, Danny Silver, to live on a billboard, attracting people's attention. He was a former construction worker and is now having complications finding a job because he must stay with his wife, Maggie, who is stuck in a wheelchair. The billboard is to try to raise money that will get Danny and Maggie a home, as well as raise money for others that are part of Austin's homeless population. What is needed is 1,200 texts donating $10. Also, the billboard tries to show that being homeless doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad person, but that you've just been put in a difficult situation. I think that this campaign is a really good idea because not only will it get a home for the homeless man and his wife that are actually living on the billboard, but it serves as a real life example that everyone can see and so it has a much bigger impact than most other homeless campaigns.

This article was about how the Ukraine government approved extending the lease on a Russian naval base. The base is now allowed to be there for 25 more years, until 2042. The president is part of the pro-Russian party, and this agreement was seen as a move towards Russia. The opposition party really wanted Russia out of Ukraine. The previous president, part of the opposition party, was trying to move his country closer to Western governments. The two parties started fighting in parliament. They actually punched and kicked their fellow members. The Speaker had to hide behind umbrellas to avoid all the eggs being thrown at him. The oppostion party claimed that the pro-Russian party violated the Ukrainian constitution, because all foriegn military bases were supposed to be out of Ukraine after 2017. I think that Ukraine needs to straighten out its politics and figure out a solution. The members of parliament can't keep beating each other up to get an answer. The parliament is deeply divided on the issue, and needs to reach compromise.

The head of BP Groups says last week's deadly rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico could have been prevented, and he is focusing blame on rig owner Transocean Ltd.
CEO Tony Hayward said Transocean's "blowout preventer" failed to operate before the explosion. A blowout preventer is a large valve at the top of a well, and activating it will stop the flow of oil. The valve may be shut off during drilling if underground pressure drives up oil or natural gas, threatening the rig. Closing the valve can cause the release of explosive pressure. According to Transocean Vice President Adrian Rose, its oil rig had no indication of problems before the explosion. Asked whether the accident could have been prevented, Hayward said, "All accidents can be prevented, there's not doubt about that." I think this is an important issue that should be known about. Explosions like this could injure or kill people which is very serious. Prevented measures should be taken so this does not happen again.

Nation's first offshore wind farm approved for Nantucket Sound
The 130 turbines are to be located several miles from the Massachusetts shore in the iconic waters of Nantucket Sound. The interior secretary said Cape Wind, as the project is known, is the start of a "new energy frontier." This is a great step forward for green energy. Although the benefits are innumerable, this article also focuses on the possible negative effects. This wind farm could disrupt fishing in the area. In announcing his decision, Salazar said Cape Wind must follow stringent measures during construction, and it must conduct additional marine and archeological assessments of its impact.

This article talks about how the volcanic eruptions happening in Iceland, are not only effecting global airplain travel, and but are also negativly effecting the farming in Iceland. The eruption on April 14th causes major flooding and has also covered many of the agricultuere fields in iceland with ash, not healthy for the plant life. I think that this is very bad because iceland is a small country as it is, and with its very little space to internally grow crops not in function, it can take a large toll on their economy along with the global economic downturn already.

recently, an iranian aircraft flew very close to a u.s. ship. the ship was in the gulf of oman just mindin its own business when the plane came within 1000 yards. the plane later got as low as 300 feet from the water. it is said that the plane was just performing a stunt as to prove how they are good at flying. the ship that it was was the eisenhower and was on duty in support of the afganistan war efforts. it wasnt so much as that the plane was a threat, cause it wasnt, but it was just an odd stunt. no one was hurt and everyone lived happily ever after

Recently, as you may have heard, the state of Arizona has passed a law requiring all immigrants to carry proof of residence and allowing police to search people who seem suspicious of not being a legal resident. Rights groups in Arizona have declared their intent to challenge this law, saying that it is unconstitutional and encourages racial profiling.
Personally, I agree with many of these civil rights groups and think that this law should be removed for a broad number of reasons. First of all, the elected government is supposed to represent the will of the people. If a great majority of people in Arizona strongly oppose the passage of this bill, then why did they go ahead and vote it in anyways? Clearly this law does nothing but inflame the already volatile immigration debate, rather than helping anyone. Also, I do agree that much of this law encourages racial profiling. After all, what makes a person "appear" to be an illegal immigrant. It's not like there's any behavior that makes someone appear to be an illegal immigrant. Let's be honest, the only way they could possibly judge this is by race. There does happen to be a large illegal hispanic population in Arizona, and that's obviously why this law was passed. I think that this simply sets up unnecessary harassment for the legal hispanic population and further ethnic tensions in a diverse community. On top of all of this, making foreigners carry papers with them seems a little Facist. I mean, really? While this law very likely was written in the best of intentions I believe it can only lead to way more problems than it could ever possibly be worth. That is why i support those in favor of removing this law as soon as possible.

This story was about a massive oil spill just a few miles of the coast of lousiana. This 120 mile oil slick is extremely threatening to the wetlands of the gulf coast which could be very detremental to the area. Oil company BP, whose ruptured well is at the heart of the spill, and state and federal agencies have strung floating booms around the leading edge of the shoreline in an effort to contain the spill, but authorities said it could begin affecting some areas of the coast by Thursday evening. This spill has spread like wildfire over the last five days and is continuing to advance on surrounding areas. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Thursday declared a state of emergency ahead of the oil slick's arrival, warning it covered as much as 600 square miles of water. This is very alarming to me as there are reports of enormous oil spills much too often. These spills are surprisingly hurtful to any coastland, much more than one would think. I really hope they can sort it out for the better.

A police officer in Tuscon, Arizona has asked that the local law enforcement be exempt from enforcing the state's new immigration law. This law allows police to ask anyone for proof of legal US residency. Officer Martin H. Escobar believes that this new law with encourage racial profiling in the area. I agree with Officer Escobar; this new law is a step back for civil rights. Immigration is really not so big of a problem that this law be implemented; the US was fine without it and having it in only one city in the country really isn't going to do much. I am not saying it needs to be more common, but that it shouldn't exist altogether.

soo pretty much this video is talking about how in 90 days it will be illegal to sell happy meals with toys in it!!!
crayz right! where is this going to happen?? California! So they are passing the bill because apparently children buy the happy meal for the toy that comes in it and eventually become to eat unhealthy. I remember when i was little that the toy was a highlight of my meal but does that mean they have to make it illegal? But i think parents should do more careful with what they feed their children so i personally think it's a good idea to make it illegal. I wonder if other states will start to pass this law as well..
It sucks for kids who wont get to experience happy meals! but the state is taking a positive step forward towards being more healthy!

A huge oil spill in the Gulf coast on Thursday has become a big problem. The estimated amount of oil spilled has been increased to 5000 barrels or oil a day, or 210000 gallons of oil. The coast guard and the army on on the case trying to minimize the damage. The birds are breeding right now, and the oil might harm them if they come in contact with the oil. In Louisiana, plankton are being smothered by the oil. I hope that we can clean up the oil spill before any damage to the ecosystem is caused.

New York City Hospital closed recently after 160 years of running. The hospital was facing financial crises and was forced to release hundreds of patients after closing. This resulted in many jobs being lost and thousands of peoples health being at risk. I think this is a very important event because it affects the people in that community and this could happen anywhere. If this happened in the Chapel Hill Area thousands of patients and workers would be affected.

  15. these changes will ensure that our laws are enforced, while striking a fair balance between supporting law enforcement and respecting Arizonans' rights. SB 1070, as passed by the state House of Representatives with the most recent amendment, gives our local police officers the tools they need to combat illegal immigration while still providing safeguards to ensure that the civil rights of citizens and legal residents are not violated.

it bothers me that they aren't doing anything about this oil box. if they would at least attempt to have some form of trying to improve the situation then that would be great! But, there' none. And the fact that this giant oil box even got there bothers me. How can people be so careless with things like that?
