This article is about genes. Specifically, the genes that make up diseases. If these genes can be located, it can give further insight as to how the disease can be cured or identified. Scientists are finding genes in strange and seemingly random places. Like genes associated with deafness in plants and genes associated with breast cancer in nematode worms. I am a big supporter of evolution and these discoveries seem to be more evidence that everything evolved from one organism.

Tuesday, the Oklahoma Senate overrided a Governor's pro-choice bill, and then the Senate passed two very strong anti-abortion bills. One bill forces women to take an ultrasound and go through other medical procedures before going through with the abortion. Basically a way of guilt tripping women into not having an abortion. The Senate says they were just listening to their constituents. The Governor is pro-choice, and the Senate in pro-life.

I read an article about in ordinance in a county in California banning toys from fast food meals. If a meal is over 485 calories, no toy is included. This is the county's way of avoiding obesity in children. A free toy is a huge incentive to children to buy fast food. I think this is an interesting idea. I hope that it works, children in America are growing more obese. Maybe no toy, will make the fast food less attractive.

There was an oil leak in the Gulf Of Mesxico. It has increased from 5,000 barrels to 210,000 barrels which is five times more than they believed. They dont know what caused the explosion. They are investigating the explosion now.

  5. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/30/health/30drug.html?hp

This article is about how, on Thursday, the FDA approved a vaccine for advanced prostate cancer. The drug, Provenge, is supposed to train the body's immune system to fight cancer. When used in trials, it extended the patients' lives four months longer than those with placebos. This is obviously a very big leap in medicine, and a very promising start, because scientists have been looking for a way to combat cancer through the immune system, as it has way less side effects than chemotherapy. In the largest clinical trial, involving 512 men, those who got Provenge had a median survival of 25.8 months after treatment while those who got a placebo lived a median of 21.7 months. After three years, 32 percent of those who got Provenge were alive, compared with 23 percent of those who got the placebo.

  6. No specific article

I have read, seen and heard about the situation going on in Arizona right now. The very controversial situation about what to do with illegal immigration is growing very rapidly. Right now a bill has been proposed that says that whenever an officer stops someone for and illegal activity they have to check if the person is a U.S. citizen or not. I do not like this idea because of the immense pressure it puts on the officer. The bill also says that an officer can stop someone who looks like and illegal immigrant to ask for their papers to prove they are legal. There are many problems about this bill suggestion. First, this bill would mean that everyone in Arizon will always have to carry their papers to prove they are a legal citizen. This is a outrageous suggestion. Second, it insults those who are stopped because of they way they look. Gahndi fought in India to get rid of having to carry your papers, and now we are saying the we should try it. I dont think it makes much sense.

  7. http://topics.cnn.com/topics/adderall

The drug Adderall has recently been gaining popularity among parents of young children and as well as high school and college students. This drug is usually prescribed to individuals with ADD or ADHD, although recent studies have determined that illegal pills are being sold as either as a diet or study aid. ADD is being diagnosed at ridiculous rates, Adderall is now the most prescribed drug on the market. This availability is dangerous because the drug is so addicting and easy to become dependent on. IN fact, people with diagnosed ADD are more likely to become dependent.

So this girl "Green-Eyed Monster" recently moved to the town her boyfriend is living in to be with him. However, the boyfriend has another flatmate that happens to me FEMALE!!! Green-Eyed Monster is feeling a bit jealous of this other woman. Her boyfriend seems to be friends with her. There's also another male flatmate in his house, but she's not concerned about him. This is a little advise thing. So someone responded (Wendy) that jealousy is normal and that she sould sit down and have a little chat with this boy and i totally agree.

I read about a bombing that went off in Time Square. in new york. apparently the bomb did not explode. Thousands were cleared off the street for 10 hours. this was after a T-shirt vendor alerted the police to the suspicious vehicle. This vehicle contained three propane tank, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, two clock batteries, electrical wire and some other components. The bomb eventually malfunctioned and no one was hurt.

  11. whoops!, I thought I posted this last week, but I guess it didn't work so here's a new one (I forgot what the last one was about)

    http://www.wlwt.com/news/23434026/detail.html

A newlywed man 43-year-old Michael L. Kelley of Daytona, Florida was in Indiana for his honeymoon, and died. He was at Little Clifty Falls, and went out into the restricted zone. Authorities said that he was hiking with his wife, and wanted to get a picture. He left the certified trail, and went out on a tree limb to take the picture. He then lost his footing, and fell, the trail was high up, like where the tree branches are. The authorities later found his body about 100 feet down the rough srteam tangled on some fallen brances. His wife who witnessed it all said it happened in just a few seconds. I, myself have learned a lesson here that I don't want to go away from a certified trail for any reason because they are there for a reason.

This article discusses the controversy surrounding the Elgin marbles. These Classical Greek statues are the original pieces from the Parthenon, taken from the temple by a British Sir Elgin in the 1800s. There has been an ongoing debate about whether or not the marbles, along with many other works of art housed in the British Museum, should be returned to their respective countries of origin. Other pieces being debated about are the Iranian Lamassu, the Egyptian Rosetta Stone, among other world famous pieces.

  13. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/11/us/11shrimp.html?hp

This article is about the massive BP oil spill's effect on Louisiana shrimp fishermen. Fishermen are desperately trying to get their hauls in before the oil spreads so far inland that they can't fish any longer. This action dramatically shortens the shrimping season, and cuts a large sum out of the final profits. This is just another huge issue caused by the oil spill flooding from a sunken BP offshore drill.

  14. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/05/10/tracking-the-science-of-commitment/?ref=health

Here is an article discussing a recent study, showing that there may actually be genetics behind fidelity in both men and women. Men who have a double copy of a certain gene are more likely to resist temptation and often had fewer relationship crises, the same applying to women as well. This could open a window onto the science behind happy, successful marriages in this divorce-ridden modern world.
