6th Period Current Event 9/18
Please post your current event for Friday, September 18 below. Remember to include the link to the article you read, provide the topic of your article, and write at least 5-6 sentences discussing your opinion of the article.
My article is about the 333 Guatemalan children who were abducted during the country's 36-year civil war in 1977, some of the parents of the children were even killed in the process; our reporters just recently found out about these people. I think it is crazy that people would do that to other people. I can't see how they could live with themselves after taking a child from a family. I also feel so sad for the families that were affected by this event. Also, I think that the US should have investigated it more and realsized what was going on earlier, because most of the children were sold to families in the United States. It seems like it should have been obvious that something wasn't right about that situation. On a good note, a lot of the children, who are now adults, have been reunited with their families.
This week a Yemeni girl died of childbirth. She was 12 years old. Her baby also died. She was forced to marry a 24 year old Yemeni man and drop out of school. I think this is a terrible tragedy that everyone should know about. People should donate to charities that help people like her.
My article is about the FBI raiding several houses and apartments in New York early Monday, on suspicion of Al Qaeda sympathizers. I think that this kind of violation of privacy is ridiculous. According to the article, almost all of the people taken into custody were released the next day, free of incident. This only goes to show that the police had little or no evidence of these people commiting, or intending to commit crimes. I think that this is simply another example of racial profiling in our country, as we become more and more paranoid of terrorist threats. Simply because someone is of Arab descent does not give you the right to invade their house and arrest them for no reason.
Ok. So Obama is giving his speech on health care, and then Joe Wilson yells liar. He is a repuplican from South Carolina. No one wants to say it but I will. Could this outburts grow from rascim. That crossed my mind as we study the southern colonies, South Carolina being abundant in slaves. Just makes me wonder. So don't get to comfortable thinking rascim is gone for good.......................................................................................................................................................... In Miami, Florida, a woman of 60 years old, Sharron Thornton, developed Steven-Johnson's syndrome from medication she was taking. The syndrome gave her a lot of issues, but most of them went eventually went away, except for that the cells on the surface of her eye died and resulted in making her blind. When she lost her sight, she was sure that there was no way to get it back and she even considered suicide. But after several surgeons studied her case they decided that the surgical technique, known as modified osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis (MOOKP), just might work on her. It would be the first surgical attempt in the United States to plant an eye tooth in an eye to hold a prosthetic lens, which is what MOOKP is. It has been performed successfully 600 times worldwide. Basically, surgeons first remove a healthy tooth and part of the patient's jawbone. Then they shave and sculpt the bone and tooth, and a hole gets drilled into them to hold the prosthetic lens. Later, the whole unit gets implanted into the eye. When I first read this article I thought that that was really creepy to put an eye tooth/canine tooth behind an eye in order to restore sight. Apparently though, Thornton's case was very extreme and it was her only option. Most people might not opt to go through such an operation as it leaves you without a tooth and the eye won't be "natural looking" and there are alternatives that are nearly as good. But in Sharron Thornton's case, there were no other alternatives, and the surgery was successful. Many doctors don't believe though that MOOKP will become a popular operation in the US because of what a long, complicated procedure it is and because it does leave some disfigurement. But even though the operation seems strange and "far-fetched", if it can help those with extreme cases, such as Sharron Thornton's, and make it so they can see again, then I think that it's ultimately a good thing.
this is such a sad event! soo pretty much, a Yale student was murdered by a Yale worker. It said that there was "an issue of workplace violence". She went missing for one week, and then a sniffer dog found her within a wall. Raymond Clark choked her till she died, i guess "neck compression". After DNA samples were taken Raymond was found guilty. He was arrested on thursday morning, has a bail of $3m ( which doesnt compare to takeing someones life) A sad fact about this case was that the day the body was found, was the day Ms Le would have gotten married! There are people out there that you just have to watch out for :/.
this is very apalling news! a Yale student(Annie Le) was found dead in the basement wall of the school's lab after she was reported missing a week ago. her body was found on her WEDDING DAY!!! anyway, the police arrested the lab technician who they believe is the prime suspect (after a countless number of DNA tests which were conducted pointed him out) in the murder case and he's in jail at moment awaiting his next court hearing. i just can't seem to understand why some people just want to take away the lives of innocent people for no reason. i hope the criminal-whoever that is- be brought to justice as soon as possible.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/09/11/parenting.rules.mom/index.html This article is about how "motherly rules" arent always so right. This study shows how the old time tips that get passed on each generation are not always proven to be best for the child as recent experiments and studies have been taken. I think this is so interesting because everyone always says "Mother knows best" and this shows that really, you need to be updated on the recent information to know what is best. I think that the most interesting tip that was proven wrong was 'Wear your coat, you'll get a cold'. I think that this rule is so silly, because it proves that colds are caused by germs, and being cold has no relation to getting sick. I find this article to be very shocking because so many people think they know what is right because their mothers told them, but now studies show the truth.
In this article China is in the process of making vaccines for H1N1. They will be the first country to make vaccines for it, if it passes all the tests. I think this is important because Swine Flu is a huge problem for many countries across the world. This is even a big problem in Chapel Hill because many UNC students have been infected with H1N1. I think the completion of China's vaccine is very important because it can then be made in other countries and stop Swine Flue from killing any more people.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/15/education/15cuts.html?_r=1&hpw Everywhere in the U.S. there have been serious budget cuts for schools. No longer will public schools have the some of the things that make our education better. In CHHS, they didn't give us planners this year. I definatly can notice the budget cuts in my school. I think that its ok to cut the unnecissary things in our schools but i do not like teachers loosing their jobs over this.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/09/16/tooth.eye.vision/index.html Ok, so in this article theres this women from Miami and she has Steven-Johnson's syndrome from medication she was taking. The syndrome gave her many problems but the most severe being her losing her eyesight. After loosing all but a slight slimmer of hope, she attempted suicide multiple times. She then found out from her docter about modified osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis (MOOKP) which essintialy places a piece of her tooth in place to hold a new artificial lense. In addition, it would be the first (MOOKP) preciedure in the U.S. She went through with the opperation and it turned out great giving her 20/70 eyesight. I think this is truly amazing just because of the sheer bizzarness of the opperation along with it being the first ever in the U.S. it also shows how much our health system can perform now and days.
This article was about an attack on an a German high school. An 18 year old student at the school showed up at 8:30 armed with an axe, knives, and molotov cocktails. Shortly after classes began the attacker launched molotov cocktails into two classrooms before attacking some nearby girls with an axe. Fortunately a student smelled smoke and pulled the alarms while calling the police. The attacker was shot 5 times by the police at the scene. Miraclously none were killed and only 8 students and one teacher were injured.
A man from North Carolina had piece of a Wendy's utensil removed from his lung at the Duke Medical Hospital in Durham, NC. Doctors believe that the piece of plastic was likely the cause of the patients coughing, fatigue, and pneumonia. The man, a resident of Wilmington, says it is most likely that he inhaled the utensil while drinking a drink from Wendy's. The mans doctor said that foreign objects are mostly found in children's lungs and that he has removed false teeth, nails and even peanut butter from lungs before. This article was interesting because it happened locally, here in North Carolina. I think it is odd that one can inhale such a large object and not feel a thing. You would think that it would have to cause some discomfort. It's a good thing that doctors discovered the utensil because they were planning on removing the lung entirely. I'm glad that everything turned out okay.
Several of the nation's leading health experts are calling for a tax on soda as a means of curbing America's obesity-epidemic. This will also provide another way for the Government to pay for its growing debt. They call for a "tax on sugar-sweetened drinks" to reduce sugar intake among americans. This will increase the consumption of healthy foods or enrage many sugar consuming americans. I personally used to love soda but I will stock up on it as much as possible before they goverment places a tax on it, it is the right thing to do.
This girl was only 24 and she was brutally murdered. She was top of her class and had a very bright future. She got into Yale... but never got out. There are over 75 cameras on the school grounds and they recorded her walking into the school one day. Later they noticed that according to the film, she had never exited the building. They found her later in the basement, in the wall. She was killed by the lab technician and he strangled her. I dont think that what happened was fair to her. She had a great futue a head of her and it wasnt nice to take that away.
On September 11th, the eighth anneversery of the Terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center Twin Towers, people come out and gather to mourne the losses of the counrty and personal losses aswell. This year marked eight years after the world wide tragity. Not only did locals in NYC gather at the memorial in central NYC but so did President Obama. I think that the attack on the World Trade center eight years ago was very tragic. It is important that the counrty remembers and honors those that died in the attack. It is very important that Obama showed his support to those personally and not personally effected by the attack and I think he did a very good deed as a persident.
More wildfires spread through California. They named the fire the Guiberson fire. The fire has burnt 8500 acres. I think that it would be bad to live in California. The firefighters must be tired to fight these fires night and day. The calling the fires a state emergency was a good idea. I hope that the fires will die down soon.
This is about a 4-year old near to death for eating a treat that had illegal marijuana in it.It was said that they had left it on the top shelf and was a gift from a friend didn't want to be rude and throw it away. The 4-year old was rushed to the hospital having lethargic, not responding appropriately, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes. Further knowing that they were completely lieing saying it was the for 3 years and never knew about it. Parents were charged for this inconvenience.
