2nd Period Current Event 9/18
Please post your current event for Friday, September 18 below. Remember to include the link to the article you read, provide the topic of your article, and write at least 5-6 sentences discussing your opinion of the article.
This article talks about Republican South Carolina Lawmaker Joe Wilson's recent interruption of one of Obama's speeches on healthcare in Congress. The president was addressing his new policy for healthcare, saying "The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," when Wilson shouted "You lie!" from his seat, pointing an accussing finger at Obama. This disruption caused general discontent throughout congress, prompting a GOP senator to insist upon an apology. (Suprisingly, this senator was none other than John McCain.) While completely inappropriate, Wilson's outburst has put the spotlight on the elevated tension surrounding healthcare, along with the divide between Republicans and Democrats.
Wilson soon apologized for his actions, saying "This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President's remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility"
A young womens body was found in the basement of a Yale medical research building Sunday which was the day she was supposed to get married. The police say that her killing was not random but the wont say why the think that. The University knows who all was in the basement and they told the police that list. The building in which she was found had high secruity and only certian people could get in. When things like this happen it makes me sad to think that someone would kill an innocent young person.
I found this article interesting because it is about renweable energy and becoming less dependent on fuel. It was also interesting because I had no idea all of this was going on in Hawaii. Each of the islands that makes up Hawaii has an alternative engergy source. Waves, wind, solar panels, biomass energy, and seawater are all being used to run Hawaii. Currently, only nine percent of energy in Hawaii comes from renewable resources. Hawaii hopes that by 2030 they can be using renewable resources for 40 percent of their energy. Hawaii is a very good example for the rest of the United States and if we follow in Hawaii's footsteps and all of the United States is using renewable resources, we can be an example for the rest of the world.
The headline of this article was what really caught my eye - "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin". As people, we've been brought up to assume that you get thin in two ways: Eating healthy, and working out. But, according to this article, working out pushes some people to eat unhealthy.
Working out burns calories and carbs that you take in during the day. But, working out also promotes hunger - in most people, the days that they work out are also the days that they eat more. Working out also makes you feel good about yourself, so that you feel less guilty going back for seconds or eating that last slice of chocolate cake. Unfortunately, by doing so, you're negating the hard work you just did. Which is why many Americans step on the scale after weeks or months of working out to find little to no change.
So, what's the solution? Well, those two basic ways to stay thin are definitely not to blame: eating right and working out are really the best two ways to get thin in a healthy way, instead of crash dieting or taking weight loss drugs that can have serious side effects. But the key is the word between them - eating right AND working out. You have to do both if you really want to see the effects.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-09-15-joe-wilson-rebuke-Obama-House_N.htm?csp=34 The article I read was about Joe Wilson shouting out "You Lie" to President Obama as he gave his speech about health care to Congress late last week. Mr. Wilson was rebuked form The House of Representatives, and had to make a formal apology to the president. I think that it was extremely rude to shout out at the president while he gave his speech. Even if Mr. Wilson didn't agree with Obama's policies he should have let his opinion be known is a more positive way. I am glad that he was rebuked, and he apologized to the president. I think he learned a valuable lesson: Think before you speak.
Pastor Steven Anderson of Arizona is extremely insane!!! He believes in killing Obama and he was trying to get people to pray for Obama's death. He's CRAZY!!! He says he hates Obama and thinks that God should bash Obama's teeth in. The Pastor is absolutely crazy because: 1) he's a pastor, 2) he's in the house of God, 3) you shouldn't hate anyone, and 4) you shouldn't want to kill someone....EVER. I think that people who go to his church will be extemely angry and they've already started a protest. Even if they don't like Obama, for a Pastor to want to kill someone is just not right. Especially since Obama is the president, not just a person from down the street, he's now part of the U.S.'s history. Some people in the video think the Pastor is insane and (even though they might not like Obama) don't like to hear the word 'hate' in church,
The name of this article is " Swine Flu Vaccines" and i thought i would read this article because swine flu seems to be making its way around my school. a couple close people to me have it. And so i would want to now more about the vaccines so i could know what can treat them. In my article i read about the swine flu vaccines. They just got results back and it seems to be that the vaccines are better and faster. They will work in a way that is safer. The best news they got was that the vaccines will work even in the standard seasonal flu of 15 micrograms doses. The united states makes very few vaccines. They are too busy making drugs that are more profitable and that will help pain and such.
I read an article that probably many of you have heard a lot about. Over the weekend a 20 year old dancer with the Carolina Ballet was killed in a tragic car accident. Dr. Raymond, a medical professor on faculty at Wake Med, was drunk early Friday evening and completely annihilated Elena Shapiro's small two door car. Shapiro was kiilled almost instantly. The saddest part of this story is that Shapiro had a full dance carrer ahead of her, and even though she was young, in order to be at that level of dance at that age, she must have not only been very gifted but also an extremely hard worker. Up to this Friday Shapiro must have worked thousands of hours to be at her level. It is so sad that her life had to be taken by someone who's job was to save lives. Bottom Line: DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!
This article is about the dangers and risks of swine flu. The first case of swine flu in the United States was found California but quickly the epidemic spread throughout the US, hitting us close to home by infecting some of our school's students. Swine flu is very similar to the common flu but can be carried by a person even days after the person has recovered. Some vaccines are being created to help prevent people from catching swine flu but can be prevented by regular hand washing. People in most need of the vaccine are people ranging in age from the very young to the very old. If you happen to know anyone who has had swine flu, make sure to encourage them not to rush back into their normal routine for in they resume normal activities to quickly they might spread the virus.
This article was about a newly wed wife that was impaled by a tree branch. The branch came through the front windshield while she was in the passenger seat, and her husband was driving. The branch went through her neck to her shoulder, and she thought that she would die. It took the paramedics a little while to reach reach her but they did. Today she is alive, and loving life. I think that this was a tragic situation that turned out okay, I'm glad that she is alive and doing well, and that there weren't any other more serious effects.
The article is stating that President Obama's Tariffs on imported Chinese tires is hurting more than it's helping. I believe Obama's reasoning (which the article doesn't clearly state) is that it will help re-open American tire factories and cut some of the dependence on Foreign goods that can be made in our own country.
Personally, I agree with trying to cut foreign dependence by manufacturing goods in our own country, but, as the article states, if China retaliates with their own Tariffs, no good can really come of it.
So the economy isn't exactly at it's finest at the moment and people are beginning to take it out on their teeth. According to Dr. Rawdin, "teeth grinders, especially at night without restraint, can exert up to as much as 200 pounds per square inch on their teeth.” This does not bode well for the health of our teeth! There are new products available at drugstores now, a disposable night guard, the Grind-No-More. This can help those with teeth grinding issues. Teeth grinding, while sometimes genetic, is often caused by stress which many have been under lately. It is important for us to remember that our teeth are important, we chew with them, and we shouldn't grind them. If we do, our mouths will be sore in the morning and nobody wants that. so buy a night guard if necessary. Take care of your teeth.
