I agree about how the author said that congress procrastinates a lot. It does seem as though they need a deadline to get anything done. I think if something needs to get done, whether or not is has a quickly approaching deadline, the congress shouldn't wait. The thing about congress is that sometimes they wait way too long to do anything and so by the time they find an answer to something, it's too late. From this article, it seems that their are plenty of people trying to keep congress on task. Congress really needs to step it up if they ever want to improve anything.

I picked this article because I think that does a good job portraying the fact that in our government, not everyone gets their way. It shows that when one party is leading, the other party dislikes it and says it is unfair, and when they get power they alter it to suit them. Naturally the other party is not happy, which starts the cycle all over again. I believe it is this balance that makes our government work the way it does.

ReplyDeleteBrendan Young
Just today, December 2, House Democrats pushed through a measure that extended the bush-era tax cuts only to the middle class, that is people with income less than $250,000 a year. Although it passed in the house, the real work of setting it up will be done in the Senate. It was a tough vote at first with extreme opposition from the Republican party (who only wanted to give tax cuts to the rich people that didn't need them, but the Democrats pulled through with the vote, if not for anything else then for the fact that voting against it would make it seem like the people that did didn't care for middle class citizens. I for one am happy that it passed, because it means my family will probably be getting a tax cut, which could really help us out.(especially if it came before Christmas :P)

ReplyDeleteMy article is about the Senate Republicans showing little sign that they would support the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. So there's a higher chance of the congress not letting Obama repeal it. I think that promises shouldn't be broken. So if the president doesn't get what he promises, it's a pretty big let down. Still, it's the government. It never has a straight smooth road to drive through.

Today I read a story on N.C. Democratic Party Chairman David Young won't be running or re-electing next month. This was said after Democrats were seen losing control of the legislature for the first time in more than a century. Republican had more wins in the House and Senate than the Democrats on Election Day. The Party's committee will meet sometime in January to choose a replacement. Chairman David Young also said that he just wants to spend some time with his family after years of nonstop traveling. When I first heard that Republicans had won a majority of the House and Senate I couldn't believe. I understand why Chairman David Young would not seek re-election next month and I think it is great that he is taking some time to be with his family.

I think this article is kind of hard to make a decsion about. Most people want the energy bills/taxes to go down on price. Obama is making descions about not taxing as much for energy. Obama says he plans to focus on tax issues before legislators leave for the year, but did not say anything about future plans for pending energy. Alot of bills are not getting passed mainly for safety reasons.
This morning i read about Senate clears stop gaps spending bill to President Obama. They need to shut down on friday midnight. Actually the bill is passed by the voice vote which means A voice vote occurs when Members call out "Aye" or "No" when a question is first put by the Speaker. If this fails, lawmakers would have to pass another stopgap measure to fund agency budgets into next year, and the House approved the legislation on wednesday.
ReplyDeleteThis article is really short, im not gonna lie i dont really understand whats going on but i know some of the words that they are using.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/the-line/who-will-leave-the-senate-in-2.html
ReplyDeleteThis article is about the predictions of retirements on both parties and who will leave congress. So far there has been thirteen retirements, while congress want them to stay put. This is a problem because it'll open a new range of senators with no experience, which is why congress is worried about the numbers. The higher the number the risk of unexperienced senates.

ReplyDeleteThe article I read was about Congress passing a bill that called for more nutritious lunches in schools. I think that this was a great move to help towards preventing child obesity, and personally believe it should have been passed a while ago. Some people argue that the plan is only costing us more money and that the government has no right to tell their citizen's children what to eat, but the whole purpose of the government is to protect us. And by passing this bill, the government is certainly protecting us from America's nutrition and weight gain problems.

ReplyDeleteThis article is comparing the way congressmen act when they have a deadline to get soemthing done and a college student pulling all nighters to study or get a project/paper done. Like most people, and the average American, congerssmen are very lazy and love to procrastinate. As do college students. They think school is all about partying 24/7 and then procrastinate in doing their assignments. Congerssmen's way of partying, or delaying, is to lay around debating the same old things. And end up staying up all night trying to get the work done the night before the deadline. In my opinion, us Americans have no right to complain about our congressmen because they too are just humans and are just like the rest of us. Lazy. And if we want them to change, we need to change. Beacause after all, we are the ones governering the government.

The article I read is about a bill congress submitted to president
Obama to approve. The bill is about funding. If it is not passed,
congress will have to shut on Friday. I think Obama should pass the
bill. If he does not pass this bill, it will probalbly reflect
negatively on him.

This article is about New York after big storm. They shut down major highways. Snow is falling at a half-inch per hour, from 3 inches per hour. Some motorists were stranded on Interstate 90 for about 20 hours after waiting for the snow to stop. Others hopped highway fences after being stuck for 16 hours. The roads are all getting blocked from snow and ice! Most people are stuck at home with no food and no water source or heat. Every thing's frozen. Schools have been closed down due to weather also.

Former State Senator Fred Hobbs pays a fine of $150,000 for a violation of campaign finance laws. The Democratic payed political contributions by his employees to get around donation limits. The law strictly prohibits that and fines $4000 per canidate in any election cycle. Hobbs confessed that he gve contributions to other politicians over the past 11 years (including Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight, former Gov. Mike Easley and Gov. Beverly Perdue) But now everyone who has recieved that illegal money has to give it all back.

Today I watched a news story of the governor illuminating the Christmas tree at State Capitol. Today Governor Bev Perdue and First Gentleman Bob Eaves lit up the 24 foot tree which was grown by Peaks Farms in Ashe County. Friends and families came and gathered to see the tree in Raleigh as they do every year. The attendees were treated to musical performances, food, and an appearance by Santa. All of these was sponsored by many departments in North Carolina State Government. I thought this was amazing and I wish I was able to be there in person. It all seemed so much fun, people were smiling and laughing. It truly is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

I thought this article was interesting because I believe that it shows that our judicial system is so willing to give a fair trial that a they are allowing a convicted al-Quaida member who planned to assassinate President Bush try and get a reduced sentencing. He is currently sentenced to life in prison, however his attorney has argued that this is much harsher a punishment than other "alleged terrorists" have received. Therefore the judicial system is taking another look into the case.

ReplyDeleteUS and Mexican police unearthed a nearly half-mile long drug tunnel under their border and seized over 20 tons of marijuana, the second such major drugs bust this month, officials said.
"This discovery again shows the cartels' growing desperation in the face of beefed up border security and the costly extremes these organizations are trying," said investigation chief Miguel Unzueta on the US side. US officials contacted the Mexican military, who discovered four tons of marijuana on a nearby ranch, while 6,000 pounds of pot were then discovered in the tunnel itself, said the ICE statement. So thats what i read about.
