6th Period Current Event 3/19
Please post your current event below. As always, include the topic of your article, a link to it, and a 5-6 sentence summary. You may use a podcast or video clip instead of an article.
A tour bus carrying 35 people rolled off the road in Campbellton, Texas, killing 2 people and injuring a dozen. The total number of people injured was 18. The bus was headed toward mexico when it rolled onto its right side on interstate 37. I think this is an important current event that people should know about. Bus safety is an issue that is often over looked except in the case of children. I think something should be done to improve the safety of these buses.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iirpHqO8nA4ZBeupaFWr_K6H7PmgD9EFRU0O2 Plane kills jogger in SC beach emergency landing On Hilton head island a small plane had to make an emergency landing. The emergency landing killed and oblivious jogger. The jogger was listening to his ipod at the time. Robert Gary Jones of Woodstock, Ga., died instantly Monday evening when he was hit by the single-engine plane. The pilot's vision was blocked by oil on the windshield. The plane had lost its propellor and was out of control. This shows that anything can go wrong at any time. Beware of falling planes!
MOM AND 8-YEAR-OLD SON VANISH INTO THIN AIR ON ROAD TRIP.
Washington State police are searching high and low for a 29-year-old mother and her missing 8-year-old little boy. The mother and child vanished into thin air on a 120 mile road trip on their way to visit the boy's step-grandfather. Inside their abandoned Caravan, search teams find the mother's wallet and all of her money, credit cards and ID still inside, but there was no purse in the vehicle. I find this rather disturbing to know that sometimes, the people we see daily can easily disappear without warning. I hope that nothing terrible happens to the little boy and his mother. I personally don't think i will ever advise anyone to go on a road trip all alone (or in this case, with a child). That is too dangerous......!
This article was about a French documentary maker who made a fake gameshow and the contestants gave other contestant shocks. The documentary was called Game Of Death. In this show contestants gave other contestants near lethal doses of shocks. Only 16 out of the 80 contestants refusd to give another these dangerous jolts. This was all fake, with the people being shocked actually actors pretending to be in pain. It was a study to see how people react to authority figures. The producer said that 81% of the particpants eventually did what the audience or the host told them to do. This shows how people are willing to do anything they are told, even if it's hurting someone. It also showed how TV is a huge part of our life and people treat it as an suthority figure. But TV isn't to blame for evry problem, it just has become an increasing part of daily life.
According to this article, President Obama and his staff have been getting into hot water and creating tensions with our middle eastern ally of Israel. Some are worried that this could be sort of a political crises and lead to serious consequences in our relationship with Israel. However, I believe that these claims have little truth behind them and that putting a little pressure on Israel is not a bad thing. If we just let them do whatever they want and pretend that they're always in the right, what will other nations think of us? Israel is already under fire from every other nation in the middle east as it is. Personally, I think that it's about time that our country played watch dog on the actions that our allies carry out. I agree with Hillary Clinton in that this is not an issue we should be too concerned about. We supply way too much aid and political support to Israel for them to ever think about engaging with us in serious conflict. Besides, getting rid the image of us as favoring Israel all of the time is in the best interests of our nation if we plan to better our public image with other nations in the middle east.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/03/18/walmart.racial.customers/index.html?hpt=T2 Walmart Customer: 'I can't go back in'
At a Walmart in New Jersey on Sunday around 7 p.m., there was a disturbing announcement. The announcement was a male voice that calmly said "Attention, Walmart shoppers, all blacks need to leave the store". No one knew what was going on, many people were in shock. A couple moments later, a store manager got on the announcement system and began apologizing and then called the local police. Police do not yet know who made the announcement, and it's unclear whether it was an employee or a customer. They are viewing it as a "suspected bias intimidation crime". Many people feel like they can't go back there now and are shopping other places, like Target. I think that what happened is very strange considering it was just an announcement and then nothing happened after that, however, it's very fortunate that the situation didn't turn violent and that no one was seriously injured. It's a shame that these types of things and "suspected bias intimidation crimes" are still occurring in our society.
the story i chose to report about this week was about some recent deaths. three hispanic people were killed last week and the police are currently investigating who did it. it was a 35 year old woman pregnant with a boy, and her 35 year old husband who was a veteran of the sheriffs office. also a 37 year old man was killed. it is a shame that all these people were killed and no one has found who done it. i feel like the fact that they have not found who done it yet shows the little initiative the police can take in the current economy. they have hardly tried and for the rest of their family's sake i hope they catch the killer.
Several collage students from Cornell University have committed suicide over the past few months. The collage should average less than 2 suicides a year. I think that this problem should get solved as soon as possible. They should find out the reason for the suicides and try to prevent more in the future. Even if the collage has good counseling, they should be more wary students.
In this article it talks about this crazy 33 year old that came home one seemingly normal night from his job as a cook to his wife and kid. Upon his arrival, he was high from work as he "toked some bud" there. When he was home, he also shared a fifth of whiskey with his wife. For whatever reason he had in his mind, he placed his kid in the oven of all places. Thankfully, the oven was not heated up or on at the time but still obviously scared the kid quite a bit because it successfully woke the wife with their crying at 4 in the morning. To me, this article is pretty strange on many levels. For the record though, the husband stated that the weed was laced with something that made him act as he did. Over all else, he is in custody as we speak holding a $10,000 bond.
http://www.dailyfinance.com/article//could-school-bus-ads-save-school-budgets/958052/?cid=10 This article talks about how in some states in the schools they are letting there school buses have ads on them. One school in particular has a bank ad on 100 of their buses and the school gets 500,000 dollars over 4 years. Most states don't like the idea. But i personally think it's smart, it seems like a easy way to get money. I'm sure a lot of parents would be upset that their children are driving in a bus with ads on it but it's benefiting the school! I would support the idea if CHHS wanted to do it, we could use the money in this school. Mirian Avendano

In this artical, they discuss how the health care reform bill just got passed. Even after long months spent trying to pass the bill, protesters are still protesting for and against the bill. Already, nine states have asked to amend or change the new bill/law. This bill was mostly passed due to the fact that at the very last minute, President Obama ordered for a change in the bill so that it did not cover abortions. This allowed the few democrates that were holding out, to vote for the bill and finally pass the legislation. I think that this is important that this bill was passed because there are many Americans with out health care and in need of service.
