2nd Period Current Event 3/12
Please post your current event for Friday, March 12 below. As always, please provide the topic of your article, a link to it, and a 5-6 sentence summary.
This article is about lithium. Before now, no one had really paid attention to lithium because it was only used in mood-stabilizing drugs. Now people are realizing that lithium ion batteries are the batteries of choice for powering electric cars. As the demand for electric cars goes up, the demand for lithium will go up. Countries are leaping on the bandwagon to get their share. Bolivia has almost half of the world's lithium. I think electric cars are great but I fear that lithium will become the new gasoline and we will become dependent on Bolivia for it.
This article's about whether or not lesbians and a school prom. At Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi, 18-year-old Constance McMillen wanted to go to her school's prom with her girlfriend. Instead of allowing he to go with her girlfriend, the school canceled the prom for everyone. She is not suing the school for violation of her first amendment rights, freedom of expression.

But any way, This girl Constance McMillen wanted to go to her senoir prom with her girl friend and wear a tuxedo, but the school wouldnt let her so they cancelled the Prom. One commet from another student was from McKenzie Chaney saying she wasn't planning to attend the prom, but "it's kind of ridiculous that they can't let her wear the tuxedo and it all be over with." I totally agree with her because why does the school care who this Constance goes with and wears, as long as she pays for the tickets to go why do they care at all. I also feel that it is so stupid to cancel the Prom and ruining everyones year, ecspeaily since they have already paid out so much money.
This article concerns the increased security in Tibet, put in place by the Chinese government to suppress protests. The increase in protests is to honor the anniversary o failed 1959 protests. This is the second straight year that Chinese officials have increased security for this particular week. Deputy chief of the Lhasa police force, Ma Jun, described this troop increase as a "crackdown storm," deployed 2800 security officers to search people and over 150 business for any signs of criminal activity or uprising. This dramatic security increase is incredibly controversial considering that much of the world considers China's occupation of Tibet to be unlawful and unfair.
My article was about Gabourey Sidibe, who on Sunday attended her first academy awards with a nomination for Best Actress. Sidibe is very heavy for Hollywood, and some say "Precious" was her first and last movie. Sadly, I think critics may be right. Hollywood is getting skinnier and skinnier, and there may not be many roles around for Sidibe. Yes, I think Sidibe is big, but she doesn't have to be grossly thin. I just think she needs to loose enough weight to not have to worry about diabetes, heart disease, or certain kinds of cancer anymore, which is stated in the article.
This article is about colon polyps, which if left untreated, may develop into colon cancer. Starting around the age of 50, adults should start making regular screening for different forms of cancer. Many people are reluctant to have these screenings due to cost or inconvenience, therefore many people have cancer and are completely unaware. This article focuses most on colon cancer. Another danger of cancer (especially colon cancer) is that it's easily spread to other vital organs such as the liver and lungs.
In this article there were suicide bombs. It killed 39, and wounded 95 in Pakistani city. The bombers targeted some army vechicles. his was the FOURTH major attack of THIS week in Pakistan. The bombers struck RA Bazaar, a residential and commercial neighborhood where several security agencies have facilities. There was video being shoot with a cell phone right after the first explosion. It made a huge orange flame that fled the street!
I read an article about the upcoming census. In the article they discuss how minorities will soon be the majority in America. The Census bureau estimates that minorities will be the majority of the population in 30 yrs. Also because of the current recession birth rates will drop 50 % in 2012. I think these statistics are interesting but not surprising. I know that many immigrants come to the US, the obviously have had kids. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/us/12census.html?ref=us
This article is about a man who could not stop while driving his prius. He said that the accelerator got stuck and even when he hit the brakes the car kept on going. Driving an excess of 90mph he called the police for help. They sent a car and he finally figured out how to use the emergency brakes to help him stop. I think that, the incident was very dangerous and I am very glad that nobody was hurt. Toyota is working very hard to try and find out what caused this problem.
This article is about three people who were killed in Mexico. The mayor, Jose Reyes Ferriz believes that they were victims of assassins. Apparently they were the vicims of a gang called Los Aztecas. They were believed to be targeted because they were US citizens. A statement was released by Obama, that he was deeply saddened and outraged by the news of the murders. This really saddens me, especially because two of the victims were parents, leaving behind their 10 year old son, and the wife was pregnant with a second child.
http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/2010/March/18/Palgi_arr-18Mar10.htm A women got in an arguement with her daughter and ended up killing her. the daughter was 18 years old and a freshmen in college. Right after the women strangled her daughter she tried to kill herself by sliting her wrist. The women said the reason for killing her daughter was because she was tired of her being disrespectful. I just dont understand how a women could kill her own daughter.
In New Jersey Wal-mart a teen was arrested because he made racial remarks over the intercom. He said that "all blacks need to leave the store." The Wal-Mart corporate spokesman Lorenzo Lopez said the company is "just as appalled by this as anyone." The boy is now in custody of his parents. Law enforcement officials said that Wal-Mart is now acting to limit the public address feature to a smaller number of in-store telephones. I was not surprised that he was able to reach the intercom system because you can access it from almost every telephone in the store, but I was surprised that he in fact did it. It just goes to show that some people still are racist.
