I saw this article and thought it was quite alarming-well, for the Australians.
It's about the violent shark-on-shark attack which is raising fears along the Queensland coast. Authorities have warned swimmers to stay out of the waters around Stradbroke Island, a popular tourist destination for Australians, while the giant shark remains on the prowl.
According to witnesses, a large shark, estimated to be 5 feet shorter than the fictional shark in the movie "Jaws," apparently tore into the side of a 10-foot great white that had gotten tangled in a netting near north Stradbroke Island.
The Australians have been warned not to swim in that area. But i know how unnecessarily "daring" some people can be by disobeying this warning.
I know for sure that i will never be spotted even 10 feet away from that area. I love my life, and i will never mess with it!

I think that what this article is saying is horrific. I can't believe that a gang rape went on on school ground of this high school in California after their homecoming dance. What is even more alarming is that according to police, 20 other people were watching and allegedly did nothing. How could people be so cruel as to watch a young 15 year old girl, someone just my age, get raped and beaten and not have the dignity to stop it? It is these kind of horrible incidents that characterize our culture as a violent and crude one. It is just disturbing to me how such an act can even be committed.

This article focuses on the topic of gender bias. In a new study of 134 nations, the United States came in 31st place out of all the countries scored on the Gender Gap Index. In the last study conducted, the U.S. had placed 27th. The Gender Gap Index surveys women’s participation in the work place, opportunities available, education available, political empowerment, and health. It then ranks each country according to their score. Saadia Zahidi, head of the forum's Women Leaders and Gender Parity Program, said that of the 115 countries that were in the original index four years ago, 99 have made progress in closing gender gaps — but 16 haven't. Those 16 countries have actually earned lower scores than they began with. The leading countries of gender equality include Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, South Africa, Lesotho, New Zealand, Denmark, Ireland and the Philippines. The majority at the top of the index were Nordic countries. Norway was at the very top with 82.8% gender equality.
This article brings no shocking news. Gender bias has been something women have been fighting for years. It is unfortunate that no country is equal and that the highest score is only about 83%. It is, however, nice to see that countries are making progress and maybe some day we will see scores closer to 100%. Every day advancements for women's rights are made. As Melanne Verveer, the U.S. ambassador for global women's issues, pointed out the first bill President Barack Obama signed into law was actually the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which made it easier for workers to sue for pay discrimination. It is sad to see that the United States fell in rankings this year, but hopefully with more bills like the one mentioned above and public awareness, the United States can move closer to the top of the Index.

    Prototype Rocket Test Launch Delayed
The US space agency will make another attempt to launch a prototype rocket designed to replace the ageing shuttle. Tuesday's launch of the Ares I-X had to be scrubbed due to bad weather, and the forecast for Wednesday is no better. There is just a 40% chance of acceptable weather for today's launch attempt, according to Nasa. I think it is about time for Nasa to create a new shuttle but it is so expensive that if it isn't broken don't fix it! I also can't believe that the launch was postponed due to rain, its not hail or snow the launch should go fine.

Police: Guard shot, killed patient who stabbed doctor
On Tuesday in Masssachusetts, a man named Jay Carciero, 37 years old, apparently stabbed a doctor, Dr. Astrid Desrosiers, and then was fatally shot by a security guard after being asked to drop his weapon and not obeying. The doctor recovered and was fine. I think it's really strange that the article does not mention why Carciero would stab the doctor in the first place. According to his neighbor, he was a normal and caring family man with a dog and 3 kids in elementary school. It's weird that no motive or provocation for stabbing the doctor was mentioned and it's unfortunate that his life was ended because of a situation that may or may not have been fair.

okay so i was reading on the news and observer how Govenor Mike Easly was testifying on his case about giving out benefits and how he was complaining that money was eing wasted and how he was just trying to keep the money from being used in unnessecary ways. The question that made me wonder why he thought he was doing someone a favor was on the issue that his house was being being repaired with the money he claimed he was funding but only using it for his own benefit; then again he sort of contridicted himself when he said it was the states money for campaigens aqnd other assortments and he didnt want to see it being wasted. I wonder what else he doesnt want wasted.

93 people were killed today in a market in northwetern Pakistan, a car bomb wnet off in the busy streets of the market another bomb went off as a man entered into a building and set a bomb off atthated to his body two wonem were trapped and tried to get out before he blew them all up, the main thing that concerns me is whether or not this could be the thrid WWIII or just another Darfur genicide dealing with the same conflicts.

  9. http://www.rr.com/news/topic/article/rr/1110/9338591/Calif_town_rattled_by_alleged_rape_of_girl_15/3

This article is about an incident over the weekend in Richmond, California, in which a 15 year old girl was raped at her own high school. Just a story like that is frightening enough, but that's not the truly sad part behind this article. According to police, at least two dozen people witnessed the crime, and not one of them called the police or any authorities. In fact, some people may have joined in, and the police believe she may have had as many as 7 attackers. I think this is yet another example of how violent and indifferent our society has become as a whole. 24 people had a choice to do something about it, and none of them acted at all, because they simply didn't care about the girl or her well-being. 400 people attended the dance, and she was not found until a police officer found her once recieving a possible rumor that an assault may have been taking place. I think this just shows that we have been so enveloped in our own lives and interests that we are completely uncaring of others and don't take our actions into account at all. I hate to think that such a thing happened anywhere, but what is really scary is that those people could have been my class-mates, or people i pass in the hall every day. I think people need to take stories like this as a serious warning and turn themselves around.

Well, I thought I had heard it all, until I haerd this story. A young musician,Taylor Mitchell was killed by coyotes while hiking wednsday. This news made my stomach turn. It just seems unfair that the good die young. It makes me think of my own life and how fragile life is. This reminds me that the goverment, and doctors can't make death go away. So in a world that is stuck in the rat race, remember life can be gone in the blink of an eye.........................................................................................................................................................................

  11. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091029/ap_on_he_me/us_meds_sleepless_states

This article is about how they are finding out that not getting enough sleep can lead to health problems...or how having health problems can lead to less sleeping time. Studies found also that women tend to get less sleep then men and african americans get less sleep then hispanic or white people. Hawaii was the state with the most people who get the most sleep, their percentage was 36. In a whole the US average of a good night sleep is 31% which is bad because it can definatly lead to unhealty lifes. In my opinion i dont get enough sleep. i probably get around 7 hours which is suppose to be good, but i always feel tired during school and i hate getting up at 7. When i do try to go to bed early it never works....but hopefully i will be able to change my sleeping cycle! anyways it's a good idea to get atleast 8 to 9 hours of sleep! :DD

  12. http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/29/bridge.lessons.learned/index.html
This article is about how the San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge isn't as safe as officals are saying. The bridge recently went through repairs in September, but it's still having problems. A piece of steel and a large metal cord fell down onto the bridge, disrupting traffic. The piece of steel and the cord caused major traffic jams and the closure of the bridge until repairs could be made. Many people are worried that the nation hasn't done enough to repair bridges after the Minnesota bridge that collapsed two years ago. The director of the California Department of Transportation, Randell Iwasaki, said the after the September repairs, the bridges was safer than when they started. Apparently this isn't so. The Bay Bridge is 73-years-old, and carries an average of 280,000 commuters a day. The Bay Bridge is also in the area of the country that experiences earthquakes, making the repairs all the more needed. The article also mentioned that 26% of American bridges are in need of repairs. This article surprised me. Even after the Minnesota bridge collapsed, officals aren't doing enough to keep disasters like this from happening again. The bridge repairs would cost around $140 billion to fix all of the troubled bridges.

  13. http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/30/news/economy/Stimulus_jobs_created/index.htm?postversion=2009103007

The stimulus package had now saved and created up to a total of 650,000 jobs in America. This is important thing because without the stimulus there would be 650,000 more people in debt or without jobs. They expect to save 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2011. This is even better because the unemployment rate will go down ad the economy will be back on track and so will the country as a whole.

This article basically explains how the new health care bill has been posted online. Harry Reid's bill has been aproved and is almost ready to apperer in congress. It is been posted online for the public to see. I feel that this is a great way to let people see the bill and let them give out their opinons for the politions to hear. It aslo shows the confindence of Harry Reid to let the public see which to me is a very good thing. I hope to see this bill passsed and hopefully soon it will be.

This article is about a plane that collided with a helicopter. the crash was between 2 army flight carriers. it was a coast guaerd plane and a marine helicopter. the big issue about this event is that not ecvery on was found. there are multiple people missing after the crash. in the big land of debris, only a few of the members were found but the lost few are assumed to be alive and ran away from the crash after it took place. many people are still looking for the people and do not plan on stopping until they are found. this shows how even if it is between 2 groups of people who are meant to protect, even they can hurt eachother. also the bond they have with one another and how they will look forever shows the power they have to stick together. they do a very good job of keeping us safe.

  16. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/30/california.gang.rape/index.html
In this article, police arrested a sixth person in a gang rape case in california. Jose Carlos Montano, 18, was arrestee for involvment in a disturbing gang rape at the local homecoming. Jose was arrested for charges of felony rape, rape in concert with force, and penetration with a foreign object. Police say that as many as 10 people were involved with the rape, along with 10 others who stood around in the alley but did nothing. The 15 year old victim was brought to the hostpital that night in critical condition. To me, this article is very disturbing and contuted. It shows me that not only the fact that something this happens so easily, but also how bystanders do completely nothing a lot of the time.

The fourth typhoon this month hit the Philippines on saturday. It hit ashore the east of the capital Manila. It brought catastrophic damage and flooding to much of the coast line. This is a very important issue in the world. People should know about these natural disasters happening overseas and be willing to donate to charities and help the people and their families. I encourage everyone to read more about this topic and help out.

The guy that owns the land at bowlin creek is tearing down the jumps. My main hobby is riding bmx down at those jumps. They have been there for as long as i have been alive. Now, there is no place in chapel hill for bmx riders to ride. The skate park in town only alows skateboarding and you will get a ticket if you ride on campus. Chapel Hill needs a bike park.
