6th Period Current Event 9/4
Please post your current event for Friday, September 4 below. Remember to include the link to the article you read, provide the topic of your article, and write at least 5-6 sentences discussing your opinion of the article.
www.rfi.fr/actuen/articles/116/article_4959.asp Wildfires in Calafornia are nothing new. Yet they have gotten worse, they claimed the lives of two firefighters. 4,000 homes were evacuated in Calofarnia. More than 6,000 firefighters have been sent to help.
9 people were found dead in Brunswick, Georgia about 300 miles southeast of Atlanta. They were all in the same family and were living in a trailer. Another one of the family members came home and found them all dead and called 911. He is now a suspect in their murder. He was arrested for giving false information to the police about his whereabouts. No other suspects have been identified for this case.
This article talks about how on tuesday morning (9/1/09) in western Mississippi a 14 year old girl got on a bus armed with a gun and tried to shoot people. Luckily football player Kaleb Eulls was on that bus to protect everyone else. Their were 22 people on the bus and Eulls was sleeping in the back untill his sister woke him up. With the short time he had he made sure the girl didnt point the gun at anyone else, by having her point it at him. When she looked out the window, Eulls jumped on her and disarmed the gun, unlocked the back door, and got everyone out in safty. I'm glad to know that there are people out there that do heroic action, and selflessly protects other before themself. yay Eulls!!
This article fascinated me because I had never heard of a "solar storm." A solar storm occurs when charged particles are released by the sun and are then sent out in all directions, creating a growing bubble of plasma. Apparently, in 1859 such a storm hit the Earth causing telegraph wires and other electronic devices to short out in the United States and Europe. The short outs, in turn, caused widespread fires. Usually, the earth's magnetic field can protect the Earth from these so called storms, but evidence from recent years suggests that a powerful solar storm could break through the Earth's natural defences.
This article is about the propaganda aimed at children in Palestine, teaching them that Israel does not ,in fact, exist. I think it's terrible that such blatant attempts to promote hatred in this world still go on everywhere today. What makes it especially vile is that it is aimed at children. They are still too young to form well thought opinions of there own, or know anything about their world and politics. By teaching children that Israel doesn't exist, they are breeding a whole new generation of people who refuse to reconcile their differences and unite. It is my opinion that programs like these will only show to increase the ethnic tensions and fighting in the middle east in the coming years.
This article is about two guards who were asleep on the job at the George Washington Bridge, even though they are told to be on high alert due to the anniversary of 9/11 that is soon to come. I think that they should never have been asleep. This is a serious thing, and how can Americans feel safe if they do not know that there is sufficent safety procedures being taken. I think that the man who reported the photos did the right thing because now the security will be more tightly watched and that will hopefully prevent any thing from happening like 9/11. Those guards should be ashamed and fired.
This article is about how it's being recommended that people wear a mask that's airtight when dealing with patients who have H1N1. This new mask can filter out particles smaller that H1N1. I think it's good that people are being cautious around H1N1. It's flu season which means that H1N1 could flare up again. It would be even worse since it's flu season.
This article is about a large layoff for workers in RI right now. It says that there will be about 1,000 workers layed off if the governors plan is enacted. Earlier, the governor threatened to lay off even more people, about 80% of the workforce. This is very shocking to me not only because of the large number of people being layed off in R.I. But the fact that layoffs are occuring in every other state also. It shows the severity of our economic status and the dire need for a new plan, fast. My hope is just that our government can cook up a better plan to get us out of this before it continues much longer.
since senator Kenndy's death there has be a lot of talk of how she will have to try to fill senotor Kenndy's shoeby trying to take his place. Reporters asked how she would take into cosideration about changing the state law to allow the governer to appoint an interim. Cockley took into action without hearing back from Kenndy's nephew (Rep. Joesph P. Kenndy II). Senetor Kenndey declared that it would take a effective and steady person to represent Washington. The question is she the right person to try to fill such big shoes.
North Korea has resently reported that they have gone into the finnal stages of making nuclear matirals into weapon grade substances. I belive that this is not only wrong, but in a way stupid. North Korea should know that they would lose if weapons of nuclear levels were used agaist the US. They need to understand that to eliminate the need for nuclear weapons for "Defence," they need to stop making them and discard them in a safe and enviromental matter. That is my thoughts on North Korea's report.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/02/georgia.tot.slapped/index.html This is quite weird. An article about a 61 year-old man who was arrested for hitting a two year-old girl across the face because she was crying and he wanted to shut her up! this happened at Walmart in Stone Mountain, a surburb of Atlanta, and according to the mother of the child, the girl was crying as they walked down an aisle. They were approached by the accused (Roger Stephens) and he warned her to shut the child up and left. A couple of minutes later while in another aisle -the child still crying- Stephens allegedly grabbed the child and slapped her four or five times! This is really unbelievable, but thankfully he was arrested. honestly, i think he's mentally unfit, and needs a lot of help before he does something even more devastating.
This article is about a recent wide spread wild fire in California that is proven to infact, not be a wild fire and was the effect of arson. It was the largest widespread fire in Southern California history. I think that if the fire was lit on accident, people should be more careful about fire safety, especially during this time of year when the air and leaves are much drier and more susceptible to catch fire. It is very horrible if someone meant to start this fire because it destroyed so many homes and acres of people's land.
Schools are changing to year round schools. Barcroft Elementary School changed it's school year to a year round school in 2003, and there is no improvement in test scores at all. In my opinion, a year round school schedule isn't very good. And to also extend the days is not helpful. The loss of summer vacation can discourage students. I hope that they won't change the school schedules anymore.
"Los Angeles, the smoggiest city in the U.S., is exporting contaminants as far away as Denver as wildfires send smoke almost 1,000 miles east." These wildfire have become common news lately but this is shocking. The fires have destroyed 94 structures, killed 2 firefighters, and injured 7 people. Recently the the citizens of Colorado expeirianced some "hazy" weather only to find out that haze was smoke! The conditions were bad enough that Colorado issued a health advisory for those with breathing problems. This smoke deteriorated the air quality in Las Vegas and was found in western Kansas.
This story is about the death of Michael Jackson. We all know he has been deceased for nearly 70 days now, but it was just earlier this week when he was buried. Many people attended the event with range from Janet Jackson to Bary Bonds. The ceremony started an hour late but it didn’t stop the intense quit that swept the crowd when his body came up. I feel like this event is very important in many lives. Michael Jackson changed many peoples lives and his music is still played on the radio today. I personaly liked Michael Jackson very much and was sad the day when he died.
This article talks about how the unemployment rate jumped again and this time to a 26 year high, 9.7%. 216,000 jobs were lost in the month of August. I think with such a high unemployment rate there are millions of people who are homeless or are about to become homeless. This affects a lot of businesses because they hav to cut back on workers which is not good for them or the economy. This unemployment rate has affected everybody including me. My cousin last week lost his job due to the economic crisis. Now he is unemployed and is struggling to find a new job.
I think this is an example of cops abusing their authority. They shot first, and thought later. This is probably a devastating experience for many church goers in the US. Cops should figure out the story before someone gets hurt.
Recently, the Obama administration has said that they will release the names of White House visitors and that the ones released will be "voluntary", which goes against what the Bush administration did. The first records of this information will most likely be posted by December 1st. Visitor's that will not be revealed are those that are potential Supreme Court nominees, family members of the Obama and Biden families, and security information. I agree that these visitor's names should not be revealed because it is their right to have this kind of privacy, especially for those on a personal visit. Obama says though that he wants this administration to be "open and transparent", and I think that is mostly a good idea because then Americans won't have to worry what's really going on with the government and they'll be informed about policymaking processes.
This article is basically about a teenage girl named, Rifqa Bary, who ran away from home. The reason for her escape was because her father had threatened to kill her. When she was found, her parents were notified and wanted her to go back home. She didn't really want to because of what her father did. Therefore they went to court. The court came to the conclusion of allowing them too seek mediation within 30 days. The reason her father threatened her was because she is in Christian faith groups and her father wants her to first give muslim faith a try. She didn't want to so they went through all the trouble. I feel that it is really unfair for her to be pushed into the direction that her parents wants. I know that parents are doing these things for our own good, but this? I think we should have our own opinion on what to follow without our parents getting into our own business.
Firefighters have 65 percent of the blaze contained more than 8000 acres. Fifteen fire engines, 10 helicopters and 34 fire crews worked to put out the fire. About 1,500 firefighters were battling the fire. The fire has destroyed at least one home, threatens many more and evacuations have been made. Four injuries, all minor, have been reported. Smoke is affecting elderly residents.
