4th Period Current Event 9/4
Please post your current event for Friday, September 4 below. Remember to include the link to the article you read, provide the topic of your article, and write at least 5-6 sentences discussing your opinion of the article.
I thought that this story was very inspiring. It's amazing that despite all that those fishermen had going against them, they managed to survive. This goes to show how far a little hope can take you. It's good that they established a leadership system. If everyone has a set task that needs to be done, then things get done a lot faster and you have a better chance of surviving.
I thought this story was very interesting, because it showed an unconventional method of capturing a criminal. The female police officers used what they called "mothers intuition" to see that something was wrong with the situation at hand. Also, I feel very sorry for the girls because they have been held captive their whole lives. It will probably be hard for them to ever live a normal life.
I find it very interesting that homosexual citizens of America are still having to fight for their right to marry in 2009. Even though it is decided from state to state, I find it rather hypocritical that citizens of America are not able to marry whom ever they want. First off, this is one of the reasons why there is *supposed* to be a separation between church and state. When people are asked why they do not support gay marriage, they, often times conservatives, say that "it is not what God intended." This is why religion is not supposed to influence government. It is fine if it helps you with your morals and your decisions based on those morals, but once it starts impeding on other's right, such as homosexual marriage, that is where a line must be drawn, and that is why there is a separation. I guess we will just have to wait and see if states will start to honor our constitution and the ideals of our country.
I hope that we do not continue sending troops to the Middle East. At this point, we have had troops there for eight years; who knows when we'll finally have left? We are often reassured that the government is looking for a way to start taking troops out, but I see no sign of this (although admittedly I don't follow the situation closely). The government isn't going to get more stable. We should not allow our soldiers to keep dying while we wait for an end that isn't going to come.
I feel this is what alot of young girls should be careful about. Having a facebook or myspace. Its very sad that girls and being found on the internet being lied to and on top of it this man was a model who appeared on America's Next Top Model. He reeled in young girls from the internet and sites we all kno as twitter, myspace, and facebook, took them to his apartment, and raped them and was caught when one of his "models" reported she had been sexually assaulted by her photographer
i think that patients, especially terminally ill patients, have the right to commit suicide via doctor aid. Who is to deny someone the right to die? More or less likely, they're in severe pain and the chances of them recovering from the disease are moderately low, especially with elderly patients. Elderly patients have already lived a long and happy life, and if they believe they no longer wish to live on earth while suffering, who’s to deny them a painless death? Hardly anyone wants to suffocate themselves or stab themselves. A doctor who provides drugs is in one way an accomplice, but in no way a murder. If the patient signs a contract that states his intentions without interference from the doctor or anyone else, he or she should be able to ask doctors for drugs that provide a quick and painless death.

I dont know if he was trying to act tough or what. What he did was terrible and it should have never happened in the first place.
"Cactus Commerce Boosts Morocco" is an informative piece covering a recent increase in the sales of cactus-related products.
Catci, a major industry? This strikes me as extraordinarily peculiar. Who knew that a prickly ol' cactus plant could help cancer and cure wrinkles? I certainly didn't. Also, I had no idea that there are people who actually eat cactus. As bizzarre as it may be, it appears as though the catus industry is bringing new jobs and higher incomes to the people who farm the plant, and those who live near factories. I find it extremely interesting that cacti, something I seldom ponder, are becoming a central aspect in the lives of many Moroccan's. This article is an excellent reminder of the variations in lifestyle from one culture to the next.
The artical starts off by discussing the impact that the Obama administration has had by use of the internet. This is the first administration to use Youtube and social networking sites to get information directly to the public without using third party distributors, such as news networks. The most popular discussion topic among political threads is the new health care reform preposed by Obama. According to the artical, some believe that Obama has been slowly losing his control over the internet discussions. In my opinion, there's now way that he, or his entire administration for that matter, could. This is the first instance where both democrats and republicans have joined in on the online discussions, and as a result there has been a large increase in people who add to these discussions. Just because there are more opinions being expressed on a thread doesn't mean that a certain political party is losing it's control. I don't believe Obama ever had control, or ever could, over something as varied as the internet.
CDC: Children with medical issues should get first H1N1 flu shots
I'm glad that the CDC has decided that those that need Swine Flu vaccinations the most get theirs first. I've always thought that the people that need vaccinations the most should be getting them first; because they are more likely become sick and die because they couldn't get a vaccination. It is good that the CDC has made this decision about Swine Flu vaccinations, and I believe that this should be the case any time there is an extremely high demand for vaccinations.
It’s times like these, when I wish we had a dictator, whose word would be law. Obama was elected because of his reform agenda, his campaign message, “Change we can believe in,” and yet, now that he is keeping his promise, citizens refuse to trust him. Obama was elected by the majority of American’s, who I repeat, knew he was going to reform the government, and now more than fifty percent of Americans appose his health care plan? I don’t understand how that is possible; people knew he was going to do this! To make matters worse, American’s now believe the lies conservatives are feeding them. How do I know they are lies, well Demint stated and I quote, “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo.” Besides, why would Obama do some of the bizarre things the conservatives are claiming such as, accessing everyone’s bank account electronically? Demint and the conservatives are not interested in the countries overall well being, they just want to halt all of Obama’s policies because he’s a democrat. I wish everyone was forced to look at all sides of the argument, before they were allowed to make up their mind!
I think the story about the little girl who got kidnapped at the age of 11 is very sad and unreal to society. I think this story is sad because it makes me think of how much of her life she missed and the oppertunities she could of had in that period of time. It makes me think of what kind of person would do such a thing. If anything, I think this story should send a message to all parents and kids out there to be more carful. These are my opinions on this story.
I think that this article is interesting because it shows how a parents' religious faith affects their children. Rifqa wanted to practice a different religion, but was scared to face her father's harsh criticism. I think that it is okay to have different opinions on a controversial matter. I also think that her father was wrong for threatened her, which led to her runaway plan. But I think that Rifqa should have told her parents that she was leaving and not had them investigate.
I am with President Obama on this one 100 percent. His opponenets are blowing things completely out of proportion. They have managed to make his proposed "end of life counceling" sound like some sort of evil death panel that decides who lives or dies. This is ridiculous. It is also absurd that his opponents are trying to make it sound like he wants the government sponsored health care to be the only option, when in reality he just wants to provide another option for those who want it. Also, the notion that the government would make medical desicions for the patient is just stupid. I don't understand why the Republicans are trying to completely destroy a health care plan that could improve the lives of many Americans.
UNITED STATES REASSURES POLAND ON SECURTIY COMMITMENT
Obama is reassuring the people of Poland about the updated defense plan and how it affects them. Obama and Medvedev have gotten together to make a joint plan saying: that they have directed their missile experts "to conduct a joint review of the entire spectrum of means at our disposal that allow us to cooperate on monitoring the development of missile programs around the world" Rather than following the Bush administration and having a set of defenses in Poland and in the Czech Republic. I agree that, instead of having a nuclear arsenal in Europe, they will get rid of them and have them as a monitoring program. The Bush administration viewed them as a practical defense system to intervene with any nuclear weapons that could harmfully affect our allies.
In the Gulf war only 2 out of the thousands of pieces of art were stolen. But, during the Iraq war under the Bush Administration 170,000 objects were stolen in one of the most important museums in the world, the National Museum of Antiquities. I don't see why we don't do something about this! We invade a country to try and make it better but we don't care if thousands of year old art is stolen and sold on the black market?? There were manuscripts of some of the first signs of writing that were burned! Art can teach us a lot about the world before humans became civilized, but now a lot of the history is being sold on the black market. And, what bothers me the most is the Bush Administration tried to cover it up! They thought it was wasteful!
I thought that this was very interesting and sad at the same time. It was interesting in the way that the police solved the case because they used their "mother's intuition" to figure out what was wrong. It was also very sad because they had been living in tents and sheds in a backyard all their life and have missed out on a lot of childhood opportunities. I feel very sorry for these girls and hope that they are pointed in the right direction for a new life.
I thought this was scary. Its scary to think that someone can get kidnapped and be missing for 18 years. This makes me realize how lucky we are to have government and cops and all the people trying to help us out to make our country a better place. I don't understand how people can do sick things like kidnapping a helpless 11 year old girl. Its scary to think that there are crazy people out there. Thinking about people like this makes you be more cautious and careful.
In New Delhi, India on August 25th, 2009 a baby was born with his heart on the outside of his chest. He was brought into the hospital August 26th and doctors examined him and such and said that he had a condition called ectopia cordis. The doctors then performed surgery on the infant in which they had to obviously open him up and then had to move around his lungs and liver to make room for his heart. Seeing stories like this kind of grosses me out, yes, but they also make me think how fortunate so many of us are to be born with all our bits and pieces intact. The baby is said to be in recovery now and he's doing well.
I can't believe that the government would be so paranoid as to have to change a prompt to prekindergarteners and 6th graders! The prompt was given out before a speech about the importance of education was made by Obama. It was "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president". Obviously, that has some bad implications. "Help" the president can mean a number of things, especially little kids who watch the president. It may range from something small, like "I noticed a small stain on his shirt..." to "I think President Obama's speech was unsupported...".
The second, and probably worse prompt was "what the president wants us to do". The government will see that as a negative question, because if you say a person in power "wants" you to do something, it's mandatory.
Even though there are a few obvious reasons why the government shouldn't use these prompts, they already sent it out, and after, yes after, the speech, they tried to stop teachers from telling the students to write the letters. Of course, all the "implications" got out, and now there's a news article about it in the Washington Times, which is probably spreading the prompts even further!
I thought this was a very inspirational story about a senior football player who saved many children by tackling a girl armed a gun. Kaleb Eulls awoke to find a girl threatening to shoot anyone that had teased her on a bus full of children ages 5-18. Things could have gotten ugly real fast but thanks to the Kaleb he reacted and stoped it before it started. The girl definalty got what she deserved with mutiple criminal offenses and probably very bruised form the 255 pound football player. I was very happy to hear about this great news and that there are heros like Kaleb out there helping every day.
A U.S. forest spokeswoman announced thursday that the massive wildfires raging in California are believed to be the result of arson. This announcement came today after the fire had burned over 145,000 acres of land and counting, the fire is still only at 38% containment. Some progress has been made towards fighting this fire, it has been contained to forested park land, at the expense of $27,000,000 paid by the state of California. Over 10,000 homes have been forced to evacuate and there is a homocide investigation currently underway in search of the arsonist who started the blaze. However there is hope, if temperatures cool friday then it could be a lucky break for firefighters possibly diminishing the fire.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/09/03/nkorea.nuclear/index.html This story is about how North Korea is in its final stage of uranium enrichment. This is important because North Korea is saying that they may use this uranium to make atomic bombs that could kill millions of people. The U.S has been trying to make meetings with North Korea to discuss the subject, however North Korea has completely ignored the United States. Foreign tensions with North Korea have recently been getting better, in hopes to not have North Korea make an atomic bomb. Over all this is a very bad situation and can hopefully be stopped soon.
Pretty much this article is about how Obama wants to have a live speech directly aimed at students on the White House website. I personally believe that this is a good idea. The president gives a little speech telling students to stay in school and to be responsible. Other people believe that Obama is really trying to brainwash all the students who watch the speech into agreeing with everything he says or does. That's ridiculous! I don't even know how you can be so against someone in politics that you believe that even a simple speech is brainwash. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to try to tune into part of this speech.

ReplyDeletePretty much this article is about how Obama wants to have a live speech directly aimed at students on the White House website.
