2nd Period Current Event 9/4
Please post your current event for Friday, September 4 below. Remember to include the link to the article you read, provide the topic of your article, and write at least 5-6 sentences discussing your opinion of the article.
The article I read was about a new technology that Bill Gates and scientists are in the process of patenting. The technology will help slow huricanes down and make them less powerful by cooling sea temperatures. The idea will be hard to produce, not only because it will be expensive but because it will be of a scale humans have never produced. Many do not even believe the idea is plausible. I believe that the idea is good and the thought of saving lives is noble, but humans should not mess with mother nature. Instead of putting time and money into this, I believe we should be working on ending global warming because by doing so we will naturaly cool water tempuratures and make hurricanes less extreme. As long as people clear the affected area, lives will be saved. And lives are more important than property.
This article is about outer space. Specifically, Mars. A French airplane pilot, four Russians, and a German soldier completed a simulated mission to Mars. They were inside hermetically sealed tubes (airtight tubes) for 105 days as part of the Mars-500 Project. An actual trip to Mars is far away, but this simulation could be helpful in getting there. Mars is a 500 day journey and the communication delay between Earth and the astronauts would be about 20 minutes. This simulation shows Russia's progression in space exploration. The article speaks to me because Mars is my favorite planet and I would like to be here when we land there.
My artical is about the effect of global warming on and a possible ice age in our future. Humans have severly disrupted the earths atmosphere by adding toxic greenhouse gasses. These emissions are causeing an unsafe rise in temperatures. Since 1900 to 2008 the north pole has increased its adverage temperature by 2.2 degrees. This period of time is the warmest in 2,000 years. So will all these green house gasses cause another ice age? Between a two million period 17 ice ages are to take place. The last ice age ended at least 11,000 years ago. The next possible ice age could be between 20,000 and 30,000 years away!
My article is about a man who supposedly slaped a 2 year old girl in Walmart for crying. The mom says that the man when up to her and said,"If you don't shut the baby up, I will shut her up for you." About 5 minutes later the man when up to the girl and slaped her 4 to 5 times. The authorities noticed that the girls face was slightly red when they arrested the man. I think that just the fact that an adult would hit a 2 year old girl is horrible. I also think that the man is guilty because from what athorities know, the woman would have no reason to make up the story. I just hope that everyone else finds him guilty as well.
The article I read was about is about two brothers and their friend who have made a website about people who go to walmart. The site was hit so many times on Wednesday that the server was blocked! They deny posting anything to make fun of handicapped people. The page has gotten more than 1.2 million hits. They have gotten positive encouragement from the public as well as a few hate letter *Form some reason CNN won't let me copy the address and paste it here. It is on CNN. com under "Tech" It is the second bullet on "Top Technolgy Stories"
This is about a bill that promotes " no-till farming". What is no-till farimg you might ask. It is when a farmer does not plow the field it is sopose to to keep carbon in the ground and not up in the atmosphere. Can dirt really save us from gobal warming?(it is also the title of the article.) One thing about this bill though this no till farming would ,as the artical states, gives the farms a "get out of jail free card". I think that this kind of farming should just be a law and what you get out of it is less greenhouse gases. There "get out of jail free card" it allows you to earn an offset and sell it to another company that allowing you to admit more gases yourself which is really defeating the cause to me. So what do you think?
Muslim teen fears for life after changing religion A muslim teen runs away from home to change her religion to christianity. She claims that her father said the he would kill her. Her father denys all alligations of this and says that he would not ever hurt her no matter what her religion is. I think that the father is lieing and that he really said it to her. I would never threaten to kill anyone no matter they did. Parents are supposed to be supportive through alot or try to talk them out of doing something if they think it is wrong but a parent should never threaten there child.
In Pennyslavnia a 3-year old boy lost both of his grandparents the same day. He was in a car with his 67 year old paternal grandfather, when his car was hit head on by another vehicle. His grandfater and another man died at the scene of the crash. Then fourteen hours later his maternal grandfather died in a single car crash about 12 miles away in Rush Township. Police say that the 47 year old grandfather lost control of his car a 11pm on Tuesday night. Both of the boy's grandfathers lived in Tremont, 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
The article I read was about theoretical ways of ending climate change. These theories seem completely ridiculous, when in realit, they are actually quite possible. The only question is if the effects of these experiments will harm the earth even further in ways that we can not predict. Personally, I think that we should just fight global warming in a more realistic way. Instead of pumping chemicals into the air to deflect more rays of sunlight, why don't we just cut down on enery usage? Compact flourescents, hybrid cars and renewable energy for electricity grids can alter and possibly fix the entire global warming crisis. If we would just change our lifestyles in a few small yet particular ways, we could stop the destruction of this planet. It seems a lot less risky than altering the atmosphere's chemical makeup or sending sun-blocking satellites into space. We all know for a fact that nature balances itself; since when has human intervention done anything but upset this delicate equilibrium?
Just the title caught my eye. Why would parents take their kids away from seeing and maybe even meeting a president, especially Obama? Some schools in Texas are giving kids the choice to go watch him present his speech. His speech is about how kids should stay in school and work hard, is that THAT bad? heck no! Obama is trying to help kids learn that school is something that you have to do, yes, but it is also something that helps you later on in life. Some parents think that letting their kids listen to Obama will make their kids like Socialism or become part of a socialist movement. Obama is the president of a democracy, not the head of some socialist movement. Even though Obama is broadcasting his speech to the school, he's not the only president that used some of the taxpayer money to make a broadcast; Bush did it in 1991. It's also crazy that parents in other states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, South Carolina, and Utah to be exact) aren't letting their children watch the president speak. Obama is just trying to help young kids get through school by talking to them. He is the person we voted for to be our president.
( The URL for my website isnt copying and pasting. I tried another article but it didnt work. But i wil still do a write up)
My article is about wildfires threatening California. In Los Angeles this week two firefighters were found dead because of these fires and it now has threatened 12,000 homes. The fires have already destoryed 170 square kilometers of land. 4,000 homes have already been evacuated in Acton, La Canada- Flintridge, Altadena, La Crescenta and Glendale. And 6,450 firefighters have been sent out to fight the fires.
Due to the economic recession there are many Americans without jobs. It is estimated that unemployment rates will rise for at least another year. Consumer spending accounts for seventy percent of the total economy. Because many people are without work and a steady income, it will continue to lag behing any other progress made during the recession. It is time for a logical plan to be instated to help those without jobs. In my opinion, stimulus packages that are not read by neither congress nor the president are leaps in the wrong direction.
Basically MARVEL SOLD THEIR SOUL TO DISNEY FOR $4BILLION!! THIS A COMPLETE OUTRAGE!!! WHO WOULD DO THAT? DISNEY IS GOING TO COMPLETELY RUIN THE WHOLE MARVEL CHARACTERS, AND THE SERIES IN GENERAL. WHAT HAPPENED TO , "we're happy and independent?" PATHETIC!! :o enough said
This article is about bullying in schools across the US. Many people say, "words can never hurt you", maybe not phyically but a new study from the University of Illinois has found name-calling makes it harder for students to learn. As many as one fifth of all 10th graders have claimed to have been bullied by other kids at school. The study found that verbal bullying happens in both public and private schools, more frequntly in boys than in girls. Schools say they try their best to keep their students from the harm of bullying but becomes a challenge when teasing happens away from teachers. The study also shows that African-American students who would consider themselves "good students" were more likely to face bullying than any other group.
i think it is deffinately true that there are alot of put downs in school but i dont think it would effect someones school work as much as this article says it does. they make it seem like a huge problem but the truth it is, is that thats the way high schoolers live. we see it as a joke and just fooling around. i dont agree that schools need to enforce more rules about our behavior, its just our way of life.
My article was a really interesting one - about a high school football player who saved the lives of a whole bus-full of his peers. The boy, Kaleb Eulls, was on the bus when another girl on the bus pulled a gun out of her backpack, saying she was tired of getting picked on. However, after a little while, Kaleb starting talking to her, then tackled her and wrestled the gun out of her hands. One question this may bring up is: Was he being brave by putting his life on the line or was he not thinking clearly and putting himself at a needless risk? In my opinion, I think he was being brave - he was willing to risk his life and possibly getting shot for everyone else on the bus, and if he hadn't gotten the gun, the situation probably would've been a whole lot worse.
Michael Joseph Jackson, died unexpectedly on June 25,2009 recently the police officers and private investigators have been looking into the mysterious death of the pop icon. His death was summarized as a murder homicide by the Los Angeles Coroner. Yesterday finaaly after two months Michael has been put to rest at the mausoleum in a higly guarded area in Los Angeles. The King will truly be missed...
In Raleigh, the Exploris Middle School is being moved to a new location - right next to a 2 bars. The name of the bar is called the Ugly Monkey Party Bar, a nightclub that has R-rated activites. Until last Thursday, the small school used to be a quiet 2-story building on E. Hargett St. The reason for this move was because the Exploris Children's Museum, next door, is struggling economically so they joined with Playspace and became a new kids' museum, which needed the space the school was in. The school feels it's important to stay downtown and there wasn't much available space. Both bars think they'll get more customers from this move. Fortunately, the bars don't open during school hours, so most teachers and parents think it shouldn't be all that bad.
I read an artical about a Yale student who was murdered. Annie Le was found a week ago today dead in a labatory at Yale universtity where she worked. She was said to have did three days before she got married and was later found the day of her wedding date. The suspect is a lab technician Raymond Clark III who worked in the same building as Le.
so apparently the new vaccine for the swine flu is better then docters expected. its fast, effective, and safe. Plus the docters use less then the other stuff they use for the regular flu. so now we are selling it to europe, canada, and other places. the only problem is that the swine flu might spred faster then the vaccine.
This article is about how three young children were taken away from their parents after Walmart employees found partially naked photos of the couple young girls on a memory stick. Though the photos were not sexual in any way and the girls were all very young, the Walmart employees still contacted child services. The kids were taken only temporaly but the parents claim that there are perminent lasting effects to the situation. The couple is sueing both Walmart and the state for these actions.
This article suggests that constantly washing your hands will not stop the spread of Swine Flu. There is a middle school where the teachers had to observe the children washing their hands between each class. However, despite this constant sanitation, they're still sending home a dozen students a day with flu symptoms.
So this article says thet this guy named Phillip Garrido, kidnapped this 11 year-old girl, raped for yaers and is now fathering two children with her. The article then goes on to tell us about his history. Apparntly he's killed several prostitutes and kidnapped and raped other wemen as well. Then, he was put in to jail, for 50 years (though i think it should have been a lifetime sentence)

this article is about the senate and how they passed a bill for $829billion to overhaul the U.S health care, and is one of the largest expansions since medicare. i don't like it very much :P
Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson won.one for her work on managing something on collective resources, and the other for transaction costs, i give them my props. next article is about him winning and why i'm upset.
Barack Obama? Really? All politics aside, what has Barack done? Teddy carried a big stick and negoated the Portsmouth Peace Treaty ending the Russo-Japanese war. Wilson ended the "Great War". ever hear of the 14 points? Carter has tried for 30 years to bring peace to the Middle East. Obama has'nt done anything, except present himself.
so this dude (the writer of the article)says that iraq is finally opening up to western civilization. green lights were hung as decorations on the out side of the house and so on...i think it's good and he says that, along with their ways of life their government is coming along too. sort of. its coming along, but at the pace of a slug. "One thing, however, was clear: it will take weeks, or more likely months, to put together a new government." -Richard Engel, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent
so this guy, Donald Trump, a billionare, who owns like six golf courts around the world and a bunch of other fancy buildings, is spending $1.6 billion on the worlds largest golf course. to me, this is the STUPIDEST waste of mony someone could ever do. i herd in a movie once that if we all could rais something like $200,000, the we could put every child in the world in school. If Donald Trump put his money to something like that, we cuold put every child in the world in PRIVET Schools, and banish world hunger at the same time.

ReplyDeleteso this dude (the writer of the article)says that iraq is finally opening up to western civilization. green lights were hung as decorations on the out side of the house and so on...i think it's good and he says that, along with their ways of life their government is coming along too. sort of. its coming along, but at the pace of a slug. "One thing, however, was clear: it will take weeks, or more likely months, to put together a new government."

ReplyDeleteso this guy, Donald Trump, a billionare, who owns like six golf courts around the world and a bunch of other fancy buildings, is spending $1.6 billion on the worlds largest golf course. to me, this is the STUPIDEST waste of mony someone could ever do. i herd in a movie once that if we all could rais something like $200,000, the we could put every child in the world in school. If Donald Trump put his money to something like that, we cuold put every child in the world in PRIVET Schools, and banish world hunger at the same time.
